Heroes and Villains

Heroes and Villains

A response to the commentaries about the October Presidential Elections in Georgia

‘A hero/ine is a person who goes above and beyond what would be expected from someone. Typically, the hero/ine does this in order to save others that are in harm’s way.  Heroes and hero/ines are the protectors of those who are ‘weak’. Some other characteristics of a (modern) hero/ine is that they display a great deal of courage. They take action regardless of being afraid, they are decisive,  they take action with no second thoughts or hesitation, they are helpful  to those who are in need, they have a strong dedication to selfless service and they are always willing to place their own lives in harm’s way first before placing the danger on some- one else.  A hero/ine always does the right thing; they are determined to be honourable and loyal in their actions.’

When I read this I do not think ‘Politician’(1) or ‘Dictator’ (2). I could think ‘Firefighter’ or ‘Police Officer’ but that would be my little girl me regurgitating gender stereotypes I was bought up to believe in. What I actually think of is ‘Mother’.

Which is a bit strange really because the role of the Georgian mother is a myriad of contradictions.  I started to explore this in my previous blog Language and Waiting http://sarahcobham1.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/language-and-waiting.html.  However,  now I  want to reflect on the Georgian woman from a grass root experience and what I know myself to be a certain reality. Revered in the traditional Supra toast (by men) and linked through superstition and Orthodox ideology to Mary, the virgin Mother, the public hero/ine in a  Georgian family is simply Deda.

My experience of Georgian women is a complex one and part of me feels like I am betraying fellow women by seeming to criticise them. However, in my experience the differences in culture and identity are so vast, so yawningly cavernous it is almost like I am writing about a different species.  I think the aspirations of what a hero/ine is  are similar but the actions and  context in which perceived heroic behaviour is demonstrated  are poles apart. In other words what we see as being villainous they see as being heroic.

Those who read all the blogs and articles that come out of Georgia will recognise patterns of behaviour when it comes to Georgian mothers.  As guests are seen as ‘gifts from God’ the generosity of the Georgian family is overwhelming but there is a realisation by the female guest that there is an assumption that nothing can or should remain private. Especially around issues of ‘morality’. It soon becomes clear that any lack of perceived morality immediately opens a door into villainy, and villainy must be punished and the punishment is the right of the hero/ine to administer.

Questions of the most intimate nature are asked and assessments are quickly made. The woman is categorised with absolute certainty.  What clothes do you wear? What face cream do you use? What size are you? What colour bra do you wear? What do your parents do? What age did you say you were? Do you have boyfriends? Have you been married? Can you have children? How can your skin be so white? Do you smoke? Do you drink? Why will you not eat? Eat more, Drink more. How can you have a child already? Are you married? Where is your God? Who is your God? What car do you drive? Is that your real hair colour? Are those curls real? Are you a good girl or a bad girl? Are you a virgin or a whore?  It’s relentless. Questions from mothers, mothers of sons, friends of brothers, aunts, wives, cousins, all related through marriage or baptism and  all with a right, a claim, an opinion and all in the name of the host.

So,  no matter what characteristics of a hero/ine the girl may have, whether she is a mother or merely a mother in waiting, the potential villain in the piece is now, the girl.

A villain is a person capable of a crime or wickedness. The word comes  from the Anglo-French  and it means ‘base or low born’. It would seem however that heroes can be villains and villains can be heroes. This is reinforced according to some recent Stalinist propaganda films financed by Bank Constanta (3) however, this particular double think seems to pertain more to men, men of power. Saakashvili, I vanishvili and Stalin, whose statue will be restored on December 21st, the dictator’s birth date, to Gori, his place of birth. (4)

Where are the women in this? In my experience the women are condemning other women who speak out. They are creating villains, villains who cannot be hero/ines. The mothers are grooming their daughters for marriage, ensuring they are virgins and if they are not then they are financing operations that ensure that, on the wedding night, they appear to be. (5) Women are encouraging their sons to have sex with prostitutes and non-indigenous women ( preferably Western) and are paying for their son’s first sexual experience at about the age of 14. Many boys are taken to Russia for their ‘first’ time. Women arrange for their daughters-in –law to be sterilized once they have had children and take them to have selective sex abortions. Mothers encourage sons to continue to visit prostitutes even after they are married and sit in judgement of their daughters if they complain. Georgian women are encouraged to have sex merely  to have babies – any form or enjoyment makes her a bad girl. Often the only form of sex, when married, is in the missionary position. A friend of mine wondered if the women had to be covered with a sheet with a hole in it and if the woman made any kind of noise was she then considered a whore?

I know it seems extreme but for a country which is in so much turmoil as it pushes and pulls against itself and tries to be heroic and not villainous I wonder why the women are perpetuating such villainous behaviour amongst themselves.

Of course not all Georgian women are like this.  And there are women all over the world who perpetuate oppression of other women. And, many of my friends and contacts in Georgia are finding their own place within marriage (and outside of it) and society, in-spite of the gargantuan political turmoil that rages above and around them in the run up to the election in October. Interestingly, no candidate is looking at women’s issues as  potential vote winner.
And old habits die hard as hard-line matriarchs align themselves to the patriarchal regime which seems almost impossible to break away from.

Look no further than at the recent International Day against homophobia (6)  where amongst the 10,000 ‘protesters’ thronging the streets women  were there, brandishing nettles ready to sting and punish anyone who did not fit into their world.  Were they hero/ines?

I think they thought they were.

Medieval punishment: Elderly ladies brandish bunches of stinging nettles with which they threaten to lash them on gay activists

I guess the most terrible, shocking and depressing thing that was ever said to me when discussing what characteristics were needed to be a true hero/ine  were said a whole year before this march took place.

We were talking about actions that defined us and how Georgian history gave clues and guidelines to help address these thorny issues.

I was told that the most heroic thing that I could do if I had a son who was gay… was to kill him. The father would then kill me, then himself – how else would he live with the shame?

Corruption - A Short Story

Corruption

Smoke swirled lazily into each corner of the third floor room. The Chinese official lit up again, the
glow from the end of his cigarette off set the blue white snow reflected from outside. Cold crept
along the floor, along the desk and hunkered down among the creases of the crumpled bedding
on which the woman sat.

A steady stream of Chinese and Georgian language interwove ice-cold breath and the interpreter,
a chunky young woman layered in woollen jumpers, jackets and scarf switched languages effortlessly
between the two men, one Georgian, one Chinese as the final details of the choir’s China tour were
thrashed out.

Watching them move and weave through the complex negotiations the woman noticed how the
man sat, lent forward, nervously twirled his mobile and constantly checked his watch. It made her
uneasy. She recognised the signs and knew he was moving up a gear.   She wanted to remain
anonymous.  There was an oppressive mood. It was dangerous. The drive to the isolated
Chinese Railroad Company building high above the city had been full of unspoken tensions between
them. Once again she felt side-lined, hurried, manipulated and suspended in a void of half-truths
and shadowy half- finished conversations. The Man’s facade was beginning to slip. The woman
saw the darkness beneath his handsome face struggling to be contained, the sharpness in his voice
was clear as he stumbled over explanations and tried desperately to remember what lies he had told
her so as to continue to create the illusion of security, of love, of trust.

This was a new game. The Chinese had wanted him to take the choir to China to be part of a festival
earlier in the year but the Chinese leader had died so the trip had had to be post-phoned. It just so
happened that they had contacted him as the artistic director whilst she was in the country visiting.
This is what she had assumed and he, tired of her questions, let her believe that. Her gut screamed
at her, ‘Be careful, he lies’ and her suspicions surrounding his motives grew more and more.
The woman began to feel the connection between them slipping away. She was not sure of anything
anymore.

He looked nervous. She sensed things were not going well, he made to stand up and suddenly there
was a flurry of activity, the Chinese official waved him back down furiously and picked the phone up
on the desk opposite the bed. Urgent scribbling on paper scattered with doodles on the desk filled
up with numbers. The man shook his head each time, the official spoke quicker and quicker to the
anonymous voice at the other end of the line and finally the musician glanced over at the woman,
looked past her and half smiled. The game was on.

They left. Confused she waited for him to calm down before she asked him what had happened.
Smiling through triumphant teeth, he said that tomorrow they would return and sign an agreement
that each member of the choir would be paid $1000 for an all expenses trip to China where they
would perform only two 15  minute concerts. ‘That’s great’ the woman said, ‘another $1000 for you
to help build the apartment.’ He had bought an apartment in a new high rise at the bottom of the plateau
area of the city some years ago that he had proudly shown to her and said that that was to be their
marital home. The apartment was unfinished and as far as she could tell no new work had been
done on it in 2 years despite him saying it would be ready, ‘by Christmas’ and  then, ‘by the summer.’

He laughed, it sounded hollow. ‘Nooo,’ he almost sneered, ‘I will have $7000 from this deal and
I will use it for another project’ Uneasily she looked at his profile; he had turned the Georgian
Folk music up and was conducting with his right hand. ‘How?’ she asked.  ‘I am keeping all this
money’ he replied. The gulf between them widened.

They spent the rest of the afternoon driving around Tbilisi, he on his phone and meeting
various people who handed over their passports. The sky was brooding and threatening more
snow and icy fingers of cold drifted into the car. The woman sat miserable, neglected and waiting
whilst he did his deals, one foot perched on the kerb, shoulders hunched forward and hands thrust
deep in his pockets. Another of the six precious days she had planned to be with him, disappeared.

The next day they went back to the smoke filled room where the stocky interpreter and the small
Chinese man were waiting. This time the bed was made and there were empty coffee cups on the
desk at one end of the room. Used tissues lay scattered around the floor.

He signed some official documents, they shook hands and with a sly smile and dead eyes, the deal
was sealed. The choir were due to leave the following Friday so the visas needed to be applied for;
and quickly.

The ride into the capital in the company BMW cream leathered interior imbued with cigarette
smoke was unpleasant. Sarah sat in the back feeling sick with hunger and realisation. Her lover
played with the sound system. Uninvited he assumed possession of the CD player and changed
tracks much to the irritation of the driver. The Chinese embassy were expecting them and all
three by-passed the security checks and sat at a table to start filling in forms.

He called five people. Three men. Two women. The same people who had handed over their
passports yesterday. He spoke quickly and without hesitation or interruption and wrote their
passport numbers on each form. She had offered to help fill the forms in but he had
brushed her offer off with a dismissive wave of the hand. When it became clear however,
that it was going to take him a long time to finish the task he pushed a pen towards her and growled,
 ‘Write it’. Feeling
uncomfortable, hungry, sick and desperate for it to be over she filled in what she could and passed
them back to him.

The man forged a signature for each document.

It was clear this was normal procedure and the woman sat silently as the anger built inside her. She thought of the hours and hours she had put and continued to put into getting his choir members legitimate visas to visit the UK. Corruption clearly seemed to underpin the things this man did. Irritated and alarmed she resolved to tackle him on his idea of honestly and fairness the minute they were alone.

Once the forms were filled in, photocopies taken and official stamps given the Chinese man drove them, the man victorious, she, angry and resentful, to a bank in the city. Parking outside the low squat building, told her to stay in the car whilst he went inside with the official. The purpose was to oversee the financial transaction from the Chinese government to him.

$7000.

She caught her breath. The Chinese thought they were getting one thing but they were getting something entirely different.  They were getting five dancers and him. They were getting backing tracks, falsehoods and lies.  They had paid for one thing and getting something entirely different. The woman felt trapped by the layers upon layers of deception.

She stayed silent for a long time. Then finally, when they were alone together and when he noticed she was not herself, there was a row. She was making him tired. She did not understand how these things worked. He had done all the work. He had negotiated the deal. Who would know if these dancers were part of his choir or not? The Chinese were pigs anyway. The bitterness in his voice and the anger coming from him only compounded the woman’s feelings of isolation.

This was not the man she had fallen in love with.

This was not the man who had spoken with such passion and pride about his culture and his song. This man lied, cheated and stole. The man she loved had said quite clearly that he would have nothing to do with such corruption and she, naively, had believed him.

In her dealings with Georgia she had borne the brunt of such corruption only two years before and he, he had been outraged by it and had sworn he would never be like that, never do that.

Glancing sideways what she saw froze her heart. His profile was like stone, cold, closed, emotionless.

She had never known him.

Children of the Sun...?

I am gob-smacked.

Did I hear that right? Did the patriarch of Georgia just tell the nation that the priority of Georgians is to re-populate, that abortion should be banned, and that children who were a financial drain on their parents could be given to the church?

Did he just address a nation whose economic prosperity (or lack of) has led people to protest on the streets because their children are dying of starvation? (1)

‘Georgia has 19.1 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age. It has one of the highest rates of abortion in Europe. The average woman in Georgia will have an average of three abortions in her life time.’(2)

I was listening to Tripod, (3) a weekly broadcast from Tbilisi that looks at the big issues and offers opinion and discussion about what is going on. I had to hit the ‘replay’ button a couple of times to get my head around the implication of the patriarch’s words. (2)

‘This (abortion) happens because of the desire and decision of the parents. It is a horrible murder of an innocent, helpless creature. And the doctor is an accessory to this murder. When the country is in such a difficult demographic situation, I think the government must pass a law banning abortions, with just a small number of exceptions of course’

Exceptions!!!!! What does he mean by that? Does he mean that if a child is a girl? Or disabled? Or God forbid… GAY??? Or the result of a rape??? Or what??? Come ON!!

Selective gender infanticide is reported to be at an all-time high in Georgia. (4) And that phrase the ‘traditional value’ or cultural norm that gets bandied about (most often, it seems, by men) to legitimise stereotyping of, and discrimination against women or LGBT people is becoming more and more transparent, and holds less and less substance.

Let’s repeat what is being said on the streets of Georgia all the time; ‘A boy is OK, a girl is not’.

And what if a high proportion of these extra children are girls? Or disabled? Or homosexual or transgender? Will the church take them then? The situations in Georgia’s orphanages are already, in the majority of institutions, dire. There are a few exceptions and most of those are as a result of intervention by UNICEF or other philanthropic organisations. The social stigma of having a child outside wedlock, or with a 'disability', creates such shame that families break up, and children are abandoned either to an orphanage or left to beg in the streets. (5)

Contrary to popular belief, the majority of children begging on the streets of Tbilisi are, in fact, ethnic Georgians and not immigrants. Children are hidden away for years in family homes and orphanages are filled with unwanted children who are often beaten and abused.

Children with and without physical disability suffer:

‘Physical violence, including corporal punishment, incarceration – including being locked in one’s home or not allowed out. Over-or misuse of medication, medical experimentation or involvement in invasive research without consent. Sexual abuse and exploitation,  including rape, sexual aggression, indecent assault, indecent exposure, forced involvement in pornography and prostitution. Psychological threats and harm, usually consisting of verbal abuse, harassment, humiliation or threats of punishment or abandonment, emotional blackmail, arbitrariness, denial of adult status and infantilising disabled persons. Interventions which violate the integrity of the person, including certain educational, therapeutic and behavioural programmes. Financial abuse, including fraud and theft of personal belongings, money or property. Neglect, abandonment and deprivation, neglect of health care needs or other daily necessities’ (6)

Horrific isn’t it?

This report goes on to name the orphanages that ill-treat their children. If the child is abandoned, God help them. If they are abandoned and disabled, then I am not sure that being in a church orphanage will make much of a difference.

I tried really hard to find Orthodox orphanages on the internet. No luck. There were state run ones,  (7)some of which were improving, but still in need of an immense amount of work. There were lots of Methodist, Evangelical, and Salvation Army ones, heaps run by UNICEF, or Amnesty International, a Waldorf (Steiner) one and an astonishingly amazing one run by the Catholic church, (8) but nope, not one run by the orthodox church.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I am sure that the majority of Georgian society who, overall, loves and cherishes its children and are overtly affectionate towards them, would be equally horrified, especially as part of the Georgian literary culture that has built an ideology of what children’s lives could, should, and ought to be like is laid out in the writings of Nodar Dumbadze.

Of COURSE it is not only Georgia where children are abused and neglected (9) and OF COURSE there are cases of neglect here in the UK that are equally horrendous. Whilst it is worth knowing that the UK has one of the highest incidences of child poverty in the developed world it is also worth remembering that we are not encouraging people to have more children. We are also not taking away the right of the woman to have less children, or none at all!

The idea of a Children’s town as outlined by Nodar Dumbadze,   who was one of Georgia’s most famous writers, encompasses a vision of a society where all children are included, and play without borders or burdens, and is one which all citizens of the world might like to aspire to.

It would seem impossible to create a place in the sun for children living in such a dark and  poverty-stricken reality however there are some innovative, creative and educational things going on.  Things are improving, and some Georgian people and Georgian business are providing a reminder, a vision of what Dumbadze wanted and dreamed for every child and whilst some  work is continuing to combat the abuse and neglect in orphanages there is also a place I think for public celebration of a vision, a dream.

The Sun Festival takes place each year on June 1st in Mzirui Park in Tbilisi and is the brainchild of Anna Goguadze, a 26-year-old TV presenter, photographer, artist, writer and mad fan of The Beatles, Nodar Dumbadze, and dreamer of dreams.  Anna is also disabled and uses a wheelchair. Anna is unique because she puts herself on TV in front of a nation of people whose smiles often belie their real thoughts about orphans, street children and those with disabilities. (10)

Anna’s vision of a Sun Festival is to create a positive, fun-filled festival experience for all children in an environment where a wheelchair does not prevent a connection with another human being, where a disability does not define, but where a child is celebrated for who they are, for their own light, for their own sunshine. Anna’s dream is for every child to be integrated into society, and to know they are loved and accepted no matter what.
Anna would deny she is a feminist – she defines herself as more of a humanist – and yet she initiated an interview on her TV show with The Women’s Fund to discuss the issues faced by Georgian women today. Anna also secured funding from GEOCELL for the third year in a row for her celebration in the sun.  (11)

Anna is certainly breaking boundaries and celebrating childhood and  is inspiring others to do the same. No matter that Anna is on TV, I am glad she is. She is using it as a platform for reform, for change, for celebration and for spreading awareness. And she appears to be succeeding. She is doing practical, inspirational and well-intentioned things, which remind the Georgian people of that special place in the sun for all their children. Not just the ones they can afford, or the ones that are not disabled, or, oh dear, the girls.

I admire women like Anna. Here is a woman who is slowly swimming against the tide of the patriarchal nonsense that tries to not only oppress her and others like her, but also their visions and their dreams. In Georgia right now there are women who see past disability, poverty, and oppression. When these women come into a room, they bring the sun with them.

The patriarch ought to be listening to them.

Are the orphanages improving? I hope so. God I hope so. From my own research I believe so, even though there is a hell of a long way to go.  If the patriarch has his way, there are going to be a whole lot more of them so I have to believe so.

We all have our part to play.
